A Curated Guide to Key West

  • For the Early Riser and Midday Eats

Blue Heaven - The Vibe: This is the quintessential Key West experience. Dining al fresco in a garden with live music all around. It’s whimsical, historic, and exactly what people imagine when they think of "Conch" living. 90 second walk from the front door to their hostess stand: you head down early and put your name on the text list: the wait is between 15 minutes and 3 hours.

    • The Move: The Lobster Benedict is famous for a reason, but the Shrimp and Grits are the sleeper hit. Be sure to try the banana bread, and do not leave without a slice of Key Lime Pie; the meringue is a literal skyscraper.

Moondog Cafe‍ -The Vibe: Located right next to the Hemingway House, this is a vibrant, colorful space that feels like a modern tropical oasis. It features a full bakery and a lush, shaded patio.

    • The Move: Mike likes the shakshouka, Kathleen likes the quinoa bowl… we have both traded those in for the blueberry-lemon pancakes!  Lol.... This bakery puts out world-class pastry, everything in the case is outstanding. We’re here for breakfast/brunch/lunch but they do dinner too.

Pepe’s Cafe‍ - ‍The Vibe: Established in 1909, it’s the oldest eatery in the Keys. It’s dark, wooden, and smells like salt air and history. It’s where you go to feel like a local from a century ago.

    • The Move: This place is about classics: breakfast is served until noon. Their fresh-squeezed juices are mandatory, and the homemade bread is thick and perfect.

  • Fine Dining, that is, the best of what we’ve found for dinner!

These are the holdouts where the trifecta of food, service, and ambiance remains sacred. They offer that "magical" combo that justifies the price point.

Latitudes (Sunset Key) - The Vibe: It starts with a private ferry ride to Sunset Key. The setting is unmatched—torch-lit tables on the sand, the sound of the Atlantic, and panoramic sunset views. It is the most romantic spot on the island.

    • The Move: Contemporary American seafood. The atmosphere does the heavy lifting, but the service is impeccable.

Cafe Sole‍ - The Vibe: Tucked away in a residential neighborhood, this is a quiet, intimate French-Caribbean fusion spot. It feels like a secret garden shared only with those "in the know."

    • The Move: The Hogfish Snapper. It’s prepared with yellowtail, roasted red peppers, and a port sauce that defines destination dining.

Louie’s Backyard‍ - ‍The Vibe: A converted historic Victorian home directly on the water. It manages to be high-end without the pretense. Watching the moon rise over the water from the deck is a spiritual experience.

    • The Move: Request a table on the lower deck. The menu changes seasonally, but the quality of the local catch and the deep wine list are constants.

Antonia’s - The Vibe: Classic, upscale American-Italian on Duval. It’s one of the few places where you can find properly handmade pasta and a white-tablecloth experience amidst the Duval chaos- it’s been consistently above-average in the years of us trying it out.

    • The Move: Gnocchi, or, the linguini- you choose between the clams or the seafood, I usually can’t decide and Kathleen flips a coin for me…
PS: the Belgian endive salad is awesome, but only if you dig classic European flavors…

Little Pearl‍ ‍- The Vibe: A cozy, neighborhood wine bar feel with high-concept seafood. It’s modern, fresh, and slightly removed from the tourist center.

    • The Move: Intimate, creative, prix-fixe, with amazing service, you need to cruise the website to see the current menu: among the most creative kitchens in Key West served with style and knowledge.

Atlas Izakaya - The Vibe: Sophisticated small-plate dining with a serious Japanese influence. Next-level execution of classic techniques seen through an Asian/international lens: Has never disappointed!

    • The Move: Sake. Maybe you DID live in Fukuoka for a decade and drank lots of this polished rice mystery, but you’ll still learn something new from Amy who runs this gem of a restaurant!  Amazing selection that goes SO WELL with the fantastically written/curated menu produced by obvious culinary savants in the kitchen: don’t miss this place.  No take out, often sold out, if you’re reading this in preparation for your visit, call today!

  • Key West Cocktails

Meant for the mixologist in you—focused on the craft, usually sans vittles.

    • The Roost: Part boutique liquor store, part upscale bar. It is arguably the best place on the island for a proper martini or a glass of fine bubbles. It’s sophisticated, quiet, and cool.

    • General Horseplay: Serious mixology served with a side of "tomfoolery." The back-bar courtyard is a fantastic escape, and the bartenders here are true artisans of the craft.  Vieux Carre is my recommendation.

    • Rum Bar (at Speakeasy Inn): A quiet porch on the south end of Duval. With a selection of over 350 rums, this is where you go for a real Mojito or a rare aged pour. Great vibe.

    • The Green Parrot Bar: A world-famous dive bar, yes, but for a mixologist, the "honesty" of the drinks and the live funk/blues atmosphere make it a holy site.  You will be blown away by some of the musical acts you’ve never heard of that play here… or check in on the first Wednesday of every month for an experience you will find nowhere else: Ukelele Night.  Can hi in you say “45 ukeleles in tune” three times fast?

    Off-Key (Stock Island)

Just north. 15 minutes driving, but we’ve done in in 35 on bikes!

    • Hogfish Bar & Grill: This is the antidote to Duval Street. It’s open-air, right on the working docks, and feels like the Keys did 40 years ago. It’s where the locals hide. The Killer Hogfish Sandwich. It’s the law.

    • The Docks Restaurant + Raw Bar: A newer, sleeker take on Stock Island. Modern nautical decor with a heavy emphasis on "dock-to-table" freshness.

    • Matt’s Stock Island Kitchen & Bar: Located at The Perry Hotel. It’s elevated coastal comfort food with great views of the marina and the shrimp boats.

    • Roostica: Wood-fired Neapolitan pizza in a buzzy, industrial-rustic space. If you need a break from seafood, this is the spot.  Awesome pies and some great salads.

  • Key West Activities

Some casual, some for the not-so-faint-of-heart.

    • Mary Ellen’s Bar & Kitchen: This is the heart of local irreverence. They host weekly Trivia Nights and the world-famous Vibrator Races. It’s loud, hilarious, and definitely not for the faint-of-heart.

    • Bobby’s Monkey Bar: A classic neighborhood dive where Karaoke is a high-energy ritual. It’s one of the most authentic neighborhood spots left on the island.

    • Schooner Wharf Bar: The "last little piece of old Key West." Head here for live music at the seaport, a cold beer, and the best sea breeze in town.

    • Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square: It’s a rite of passage. Street performers, local artisans, and the communal viewing of the sunset. It’s touristy, but the energy is undeniable.

Activities Across the Keys (Up to Largo!)

    • The Turtle Hospital (Marathon): A converted motel that now rehabilitates sea turtles. The guided tours are heart-warming and educational—a true Keys treasure.

    • Robbie’s of Islamorada: You cannot drive past without stopping to feed the massive tarpon from the docks. It’s a total cliché that actually lives up to the fun.

    • John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park (Key Largo): The first undersea park in the U.S. Whether you snorkel, dive, or take the glass-bottom boat, the reef here is world-class.

    • The Dolphin Research Center (Grassy Key): A non-profit focused on education and research. It’s a much more grounded experience than your typical "swim with dolphins" tourist trap.

  • The Leftovers

The ones that didn’t fit a mold but are essential nonetheless.

    • El Siboney: The benchmark for Cuban food. Casual, fluorescent-lit, and the roast pork is life-changing.

    • Conch Republic Seafood Company: Huge, open-air, and perfect for watching the charter fleet come in. A great hybrid of food and waterfront atmosphere.
